

What is a Maternity Nurse?
A Maternity Nurse offers support to new parent and will provide the mother with
a sense of security during those physically and mentally exhausting first few weeks
after child birth. When booked in advance they can start with a new family
immediately after discharge from hospital, helping you to settle your baby into your home.
She will work 24 hours for between 4-6days, Clients provide the nurse with accommodation
and all the meals for the duration of the booking. The majority of nurses sleep in the
baby’s room.
Effective communication between the parents and maternity nurse is essential to the
on-going success of the relationship and the baby’s development.
Working long hours and having broken sleep can easily result in the maternity nurse
becoming tired. It is recommended that breaks should form part of a pre-agreed work
patterns and should be given 3-4hours break each day to catch up on her sleep in order
to remain fully effective.
Maternity Nurses are self-employed and are responsible for their own Tax and National
Insurance Contributions.
What is a Maternity Nurse Job description?
- Give help and advice on getting the baby into a proper feeding and sleeping routines.
- Offer strategies on coping with post-natal depression.
- Under take the baby’s laundry and can help with essential purchases and advise on the non-essentials.
- Night feed.
- Responsible for the bottles
- Tidy the nursery.
- Impart knowledge to the mother on how to care for the baby and ensure the mothers are well looked after getting enough sleep.
- Most Nurses will not be responsible for any household chores other than the baby’s, nor will they be responsible for the care of any other children in the household without prior agreement. The Nurses differ in extra duties they are willing to perform, most are willing to help but it is essential that you discuss this with the individual Maternity Nurse at interview stage.

Maternity Nurse Salary:
- Single Baby From £100 / 24hours
- Twins From £140 / 24hours
- Triplets From £160 / 24hours
Postnatal Nannies are self-employed and are responsible for their own Tax
and National Insurance Contributions. All our Postnatal Nannies are fully
trained and have newborn baby experience.
